Parents who purchased NUK baby bottles from Amazon.com, where it was exclusively sold for U.S. and Canadian consumers, should know that a recall order has been issued for its glass bottles due to high lead content.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the specific NUK items for recall are the First Choice 240 mL glass baby bottles, which have some markings on the outside. These designs, with the NUK lettering and specks of white or gray stars, apparently exceeded the federal content ban for lead.

Under federal law, paint and surface coatings in baby products should not containt a lead concentration of higher than 0.009 percent. The glass bottles for 0 to 6-month-old babies were manufactured specifically for the U.K. market, thus ascribing to a different content guideline.

However, some 100 bottles were sold at the Amazon e-commerce store in America, and at least 77 have been purchased by Canadian parents between January 2018 to May 2022.

What's the risk of the NUK baby bottle recall?

While there have been no reported injuries or death, Astir Care Ltd., the importer of the products, voluntarily initiated the recall. The CPSC also advised families to stop using these glass baby bottles.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lead ingestion may cause lead poisoning that can trigger long-term health effects. In kids, lead poisoning could damage the nervous system and the brain, causing the child to develop speech problems, behavioral issues, or slower mental development.

Studies have shown that even low levels of lead in the bloodstream may impact a child's cognitive ability and intelligence. They may struggle with paying attention in class and perform poorly in their academics.

NUK baby bottle buyers may file for a refund request via the Astir Care recall notice. The company said they will contact purchasers directly and arrange for the return of the bottles, alongside the refund.

The anti-colic baby bottle

NUK First Choice 240 mL glass baby bottles have been a top pick for parents because they are known to prevent colic and have an anti-colic air system that allows for a natural flow without the baby swallowing air. The bottle is also featured with a teat that has been modeled after a mother's breast so the baby will not be confused with transitioning from breastfeeding to bottle feeding, especially when the mom has to pump breast milk at work.

All NUK baby bottles are made in Germany. The company is proud of its extensive research from the raw materials to the packaging, adding that it has met many standards, especially when it comes to children's development.

"NUK Products are developed so that they not only satisfy German safety criteria but also meet the statutory regulations of the many countries where they are available," the company said on its official site.
