How Buying Clothes for Your Child Is Fun, but Sizing Can Be Tricky

Although you bought your toddler's pants a week ago, it is now too short for him. Children do not grow as fast as they did when they were newborns, but it can still seem like your child always needs new clothes. Knowing the exact clothing size would be a great help.

Children's sizes are more than just primarily ranked by age, like baby sizes, because they grow at different rates. Two clothing size systems may overlap; one goes by months while the other goes by years.

Toddlers grow at their own pace, meaning that no two toddlers are alike. For instance, a 1-year-old toddler boy weighs 21 pounds and stands 30 inches tall, while the average toddler girl weighs 19 pounds and stands 29 inches tall at this age.

Your child might be shorter or bigger at such ages. But what truly matters is children grow along their curves.

Leah Alexander, M.D., FAAP, a board-certified pediatrician in New Jersey and the senior editor of Amy Baby Review, explains that there is a variation in toddler size; some girls may appear taller or heavier compared to boys of the same age.

Toddler sizes range from 2T to 5T

Keep in mind there is not much physical growth, particularly during the toddler stage, unlike during the first year of life. Ensure to reach out to your juvenile's pediatrician or healthcare provider with any concerns regarding your toddler's size or growth.

Toddler sizes range from 2T to 5T. The number represents the child's approximate age in years, while the T stands for "toddler."

Size Height Weight

2T - 33.5 to 35 inches, 30 to 32 pounds

 3T - 35 to 38 inches, 32 to 35 pounds

4T - 38 to 41 inches, 35 to 39 pounds

5T - 41 to 44 inches, 39 to 45 pounds

Pants sized 24 months will have extra room to accommodate a diaper under the clothes. Pants sized 2T will be leaner as they are over underwear. Sizes are distinguished from babies because they are already walking, noted Jeff Fischer, a garment industry veteran and co-founder of DTC childrenswear brand Young Days.

Moreover, toddlers' bodies are different as they are shaped based on activeness and have also started losing their baby fat, per Very Well Family.

Measuring a child's clothing size

Choosing your child's clothes may be fun, especially as a first-time parent because you will now be able to dress your child the way you like and based on their comfort. However, getting your child to hold still so you can measure them can be challenging.

Moreover, when buying clothes, remember that American, Australian, and British sizes are primarily based on the child's age, while European sizes are based on the child's height in centimeters.

You can start by measuring your child's height and buy clothes based on it instead of their age because many kids will only wear the exact size that corresponds to their age. Nevertheless, understanding the basics will surely help you to choose the proper toddler clothing sizes, The Breakie Bunch says.
