Relocating with kids can be a tricky business at the best of time. Moving is an upheaval that comes with loads of challenges, and kids can find the entire process stressful and disruptive. With that in mind, the idea of relocating over the Christmas holidays might sound like the worst idea in the world.

And it is true. Relocating during the festive season does have it's downsides.

But there are also some unexpected and potentially surprising upsides to a Christmas relocation.

So if you are in the process of organizing all the legal services and organization required to move home, here are a few things to consider about timing your move to coincide with the Christmas holiday.

Pros

Kids are out of school

One of the biggest advantages of relocating over the Christmas holidays is that school is out. This means that your kids will be on vacation and won't have to miss any school days during the move itself. It also means that they won't have to deal with the stress of starting a new school in the middle of the semester, which can be a difficult and challenging thing to do. Finally, moving over the school break means that they will be able to settle into their new home and explore their new neighborhood without the added pressure of homework and school commitments. This can help them become accustomed to their new home far more quickly.

Lower rates for certain businesses

Moving home is an expensive business, and anywhere you can save a little money is a good thing. Although the festive season is peak time for the hospitality industry, there are plenty of businesses for whom Christmas is a slow period, and therefore offer lower rates over the holidays. Many storage companies, for example, offer great deals for storage rental over Christmas, as do removal businesses. This could be the perfect way to save a little cash (although it will probably get spent on Christmas presents or the perfect Christmas tree!).

Cons

It's a busy time of year

While some of your friends might have dashed off on a last-minute escapade, chances are that most of your family and social network will be around and organizing get-togethers and things to do all the way through the holidays. Christmas is a busy time of year, and one of the main downsides to relocating during the holidays is having to navigate a flurry of parties, events, and vital commitments. Added to this, some businesses are closed for long periods during the festive season, which can make organizing anything, from storage to moving services, complicated. If you are planning on relocating during the Christmas holidays, it is important to start planning as early as possible.

Kids might find it disruptive

Although your kids will be out of school, that doesn't mean that they will find the process of relocation easy. In fact, for many kids, the Christmas holidays are a time for resting, relaxing, and spending time with friends and family, which can make moving at this time disruptive and stressful. Your kids might resent the fact that 'their holiday is ruined' or that they have to do things other than celebrating, which could make the move more unpleasant for everyone.

If you are planning on relocating during the Christmas holidays, it is important to talk to your kids about the move in advance, and to help them to understand the reasons behind it. This will help to make the whole process easier for them, and for you!
