The University of Alabama basketball player Darius Miles was arrested for a fatal shooting near the campus strip.

Darius Miles, 21, and Michael Lynn Davis, 20, were charged with capital murder for killing Jamea Harris, 23.

As a general rule, those convicted of capital murder in Alabama are sentenced to more severe penalties than those convicted of other types of murder.

According to Captain Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa Police Department, the shooting happened early on Sunday morning on the Strip off University Blvd. near campus.

Near-Shooting incident

Michael Lynn Davis, 20, of Charles County, Maryland, and Darius Miles, 21, a junior reserve forward from Washington, District of Columbia, were both charged with capital murder.

According to Alabama Local News, police officers from Tuscaloosa were notified of gunfire at the University of Alabama at around 1:45 a.m. on Sunday. The authorities immediately responded at the Walk of Champions at Bryant Denny Stadium.

Upon patrolling the area, Harris was found dead inside a car that had stopped there after seeing a University of Alabama Police vehicle.

The driver, who had not been recognized then, told the police that gunshots had been directed at their car. The driver said he had fired back in self-defense and may have hit one of the suspects.

Kennedy stated that they were able to identify two individuals after interviewing several witnesses and studying the video security footage.

Upon closer look, the investigation revealed that the exact location of the incident was near University Boulevard, in the 400 block of Grace Street.

According to CBS News, the only reason for the near-school shooting was a brief dispute these people had with the victim when they were out on the Strip.

The injuries sustained by the suspect who was shot were not considered life-threatening, and Kennedy did not divulge either the identity of the shooter or the identity of the person who was shot.

The charge of first-degree capital murder was brought about as a result of bullets being fired into a car.

The Alabama basketball player

According to the Washington Post, Alabama Athletics had recently been made aware of the charges pressed against their student-athlete Darius Miles.

According to the organization, he is no longer a part of the Alabama men's basketball team as of the current season.

They stated that Alabama Athletics and the University assist in every way possible with this investigation.

In addition, they sent their most heartfelt condolences to the victim's family and friends following the tragic event that occurred late the previous evening.

However, further information revealed that a few hours before the shooting, the Alabama Athletics revealed that Miles would not participate this season due to an ankle injury.

His absence this season is because of an injury sustained during a preseason camp, and the organization's medical staff has decided that it is in Miles' best interest to keep him away from basketball activities moving forward so that he can concentrate on his rehabilitation.
