Missouri Sophomore Student Faces Suspension After Recording Teacher's Racist Slur

A high school sophomore in Missouri is facing a suspension after recording her teacher using a racist slur during a classroom incident.

The incident, which took place at Glendale High School in Springfield, has sparked controversy and raised questions about student rights and the appropriate handling of such incidents.

Some have commended the student's actions for her courage in standing up against racism, while others argue that she should not have been punished for her actions. 

Racist Incident Unveiled: Missouri Student Takes a Stand

According to NBC News, the incident occurred on May 9 during a geometry class when the teacher, who has not been publicly identified, used a racist slur multiple times.

Responding to the offensive language, the student, identified as Mary Walton, made the bold decision to record the teacher's remarks on her cellphone. The video captured the teacher using the racial epithet twice, along with another student expressing objection to the usage.

In response to the student's objection, the teacher defended himself, stating that he was not directing the slur toward anyone but claimed he had the right to use it.

Suspension Raises Controversy

Following the incident, the student, Mary Walton, found herself facing disciplinary action. Natalie Hull, her lawyer, said Mary was suspended under a school policy that prohibits students from recording faculty members without their consent, per a CNN report. 

Hull argues that Walton's recording was an act of standing up for what is right, and she should not have been punished for documenting a racist incident. Supporters liken Walton's actions to that of a whistleblower, believing that she should be applauded for shedding light on the inappropriate behavior of her teacher.

The school district, on the other hand, stands by its decision to suspend the student. According to district spokesperson Stephen Hall, student discipline is confidential as per federal law, and therefore, the specifics of the punishment cannot be disclosed.

Hall also highlighted the school's policy regarding the inappropriate use of electronic devices, which includes consequences for recording faculty members without approval. The district maintains that their actions are aligned with the goal of ensuring a safe and welcoming learning environment.

As reported by the BBC, amidst the controversy, the head of the Radio Television News Association, Dan Shelley, voiced his support for Walton.

In a letter to school officials, Shelley expressed "serious concerns" about her suspension, stating that she should be praised rather than punished for capturing a newsworthy event. He drew a parallel between Walton's actions and those of journalists who report on such incidents.

As the community awaits the school district's response to the incident, questions arise regarding the need for a reevaluation of the existing policy on recording incidents involving faculty members.

Advocates argue that policies should be revised to allow students to document unacceptable behavior for the purpose of reporting and addressing concerns effectively.
