Pennsylvania Park Tragedy: Man Dies After Rescuing Kids from Drowning in Lake Nockamixon

In a heartbreaking incident at Nockamixon State Park in eastern Pennsylvania, a heroic man lost his life after rescuing two children from drowning in Lake Nockamixon.

Marvin Alexan Fernandez Chicas, 37, selflessly sprang into action when he spotted the struggling children in the prohibited swimming area of the park.

Despite his valiant efforts, Chicas tragically succumbed to the water and drowned.

According to NBC News, Marvin Alexan Fernandez Chicas, a resident of Telford, Pennsylvania, was engaged in fishing activities at the park in Quakertown around 4:30 p.m. when he noticed the distressed children in the water, as stated by Bucks County Coroner Meredith Buck.

According to Wesley Robinson, a spokesperson for the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the children's identities remain undisclosed, and they were found struggling in the Tohickon Creek-a designated no-swim zone adjacent to the cliffs.

Upon observing the children's plight, Chicas courageously leaped into the water and successfully brought them to safety on the shore.

Despite his successful rescue of the children, Chicas soon encountered difficulties himself. Wesley Robinson, revealed that Chicas began to struggle after bringing the children to safety.

Unfortunately, he vanished beneath the water's surface and could not be located immediately. A thorough search operation ensued, involving multiple boats and approximately ten divers from various rescue teams.

Divers conducted a search operation and recovered Chicas's body from Lake Nockamixon shortly before 7:30 p.m.

According to USA Today, Chicas, originally from Honduras, had no familial connection to the children he selflessly saved. Following an autopsy, drowning was officially determined as the cause of his death, deemed accidental by Buck.

Regarding the children who were rescued, Robinson stated that there is currently no available information concerning their ages or whether they needed any medical attention.

Nockamixon State Park's Prohibited Swimming Area

Lake Nockamixon, covering an expansive 1,450 acres, stands as the largest lake in Bucks County. Swimming is strictly prohibited in both the lake and the adjoining Tohickon Creek.

As reported by WFMZ, Fire Chief Harry Grim of Haycock Township emphasized the deceptive and dangerous nature of the lake, stating that many areas possess sudden drops and hidden hazards.

Despite these risks, individuals often flout the rules, leading to tragic outcomes like Chicas's untimely demise.

Grim expressed his frustration with people disregarding regulations, underscoring the need for caution when near the water.

He cautioned that the lake's visibility is often limited, making it challenging for divers to locate and retrieve submerged individuals.

Grim strongly emphasized the importance of refraining from swimming in Lake Nockamixon, citing the prevailing zero visibility conditions during this period.

He explained that even at a depth of 10 feet, divers are unable to see their own hands in front of their faces.

Consequently, the likelihood of successfully locating and rescuing individuals in such circumstances is extremely low.

According to Grim, Fernandez-Chicas was ultimately discovered approximately 25 feet away from the shoreline.

The two rescued children, fortunately, did not suffer any injuries during the incident.
