Police Report: Phoenix Dad Arrested for Letting 10-Year-Old Son Drive Pickup Truck on Highway

In an incident that has stunned the local community and ignited a fervent debate on social media about parental responsibility, a 49-year-old Phoenix man was arrested on Saturday for allowing his 10-year-old son to drive a pickup truck on State Route 101 in Scottsdale. The young boy led Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers on a brief, but precarious, chase before being pulled over.

A Brief but Dangerous Pursuit

The situation came to light when a concerned motorist dialed 911 around 3:30 p.m., reporting that it appeared a child was behind the wheel on the busy freeway. DPS quickly dispatched a trooper to investigate. Upon locating the vehicle, the trooper noticed unsafe lane changes and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Contrary to expectations, the truck did not immediately pull over. A brief chase ensued, before the 10-year-old finally stopped in an emergency lane.

Authorities discovered the child in the driver's seat and his father, who was arrested at the scene, in the passenger seat. An open container of alcohol was also found in the vehicle, adding another layer of concern to the already alarming episode.

The father now faces multiple charges, including endangerment, unlawfully permitting a minor to drive, and possessing an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. Meanwhile, the 10-year-old is not facing any criminal charges, DPS officials confirmed.

"Permitting a minor to operate a motor vehicle is not just a violation of Arizona law; It's a critical lapse in judgment," said DPS spokesperson Karen Smith. "High-speed roads are complex and unpredictable, even for mature, experienced drivers.To entrust a 10-year-old with such a responsibility is inconceivably reckless."

Public opinion has been swift and severe. Local parent organizations have spoken out against the father's actions. "Parenting isn't just about taking care of your child's immediate needs; It's about teaching them right from wrong and ensuring their safety. This incident is a clear failure in both those respects", said Sarah Johnson, a member of the Phoenix Parents Association.
