Detroit Mother Faces Arrest After Allegedly Abandoning Toddler on Beach Amid Rising Waves

In a distressing incident that has stunned communities in both Detroit and Daytona, Florida, Shamika Mitchell, a 37-year-old mother from Detroit, has been arrested and charged with child neglect. She allegedly left her 1-year-old son alone on Daytona Beach in chilly conditions, where he was later found shivering and partially submerged by waves.

Horrific Discovery and Rescue Operation

The incident unfolded in the early hours of November 8 when the toddler was found in a perilous situation on the beach, with temperatures hovering around 57 degrees. Mitchell, vacationing with her four children, was captured on video surveillance leaving the beach before midnight on November 7 and heading back to her car parked at Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church's lot. The church had kindly allowed Mitchell and her children to stay in their parking lot overnight.

Mitchell's teenage son, sensing something was wrong, confronted his mother about the whereabouts of his younger brother. Mitchell's claim of handing the baby over to his father was met with skepticism, leading to a 911 call. A woman walking on the beach noticed the child in the sand, initially mistaking him for an animal. The bystander and others at the scene rescued the child from the waves, removed his wet diapers, and tried to warm him up until authorities arrived.

The Volusia County Sheriff's deputies responded quickly, placing the unresponsive child, whose skin was cold to the touch, in a patrol car and turning on the heater to warm him. Paramedics soon arrived to provide medical treatment. The child was subsequently reported to be in good care.

Shamika Mitchell was arrested following the incident and remains in custody at the Volusia County Jail on a $50,000 bond. In a disconcerting development, Mitchell's older son was also arrested on the same night. Overwhelmed by the situation, he tried to hit his mother while she was speaking to the police and allegedly assaulted two officers who attempted to intervene.

DeShawn Gales, Mitchell's boyfriend, reported that the baby has been released from the hospital and is now in safe care.
