According to Superintendent B.R. Jones of the Jones County School District, the driver was operating the bus at a moderate speed of approximately 20 to 25 miles per hour when the unexpected stop occurred.

Upon reflection, Jones recounted the moment of realization, noting, "As he looked up, he noticed in the rearview mirror, amidst the confusion and commotion, a tree had fallen onto the bus."

The impact of the oak tree caused substantial damage, piercing through the roof and collapsing the interior of the vehicle.

Jones further disclosed that the school district had recently acquired the bus prior to the incident, rendering its destruction a significant loss. However, he reassured that spare buses are available for immediate use, and plans are underway to replace the damaged ones.

Regarding the tree's condition, Jones clarified that it showed no signs of decay or rot, making its collapse an unforeseen event. Reflecting on the incident, he expressed gratitude that no injuries were sustained, deeming it a fortunate outcome amidst the unexpected circumstances.

"It was just so out of the ordinary. You never anticipate or even think something like that could occur. And it's just a blessing that no one was injured and no one was hurt," Jones said.

In light of the incident, the driver, while recovering well, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support extended by the community, highlighting the resilience and unity fostered in times of adversity.

He said, "From what I understand, it was in a swampy area and with the gusts of wind and things like that, the whole root system just gave way and fell into the road."

The crash took place on the border of Jones and Jasper counties in southern Mississippi, prompting immediate action from the bus driver, who called for help upon realizing the situation. Fortunately, both the driver and any students on board remained unharmed.

Cleanup efforts involved multiple crews from both counties, although Jones noted that such accidents are challenging to prepare for. Despite the unexpected nature of the incident, he emphasized the community's gratitude for the safety of everyone involved.
