A Walmart overcharging lawsuit is giving its customers cash settlements to be claimed.

As part of a class-action lawsuit settlement, Walmart customers may qualify for compensation of up to $500. This settlement pertains to allegations of overcharging for specific products. If you made purchases of weighted goods or bagged citrus items between October 2018 and January 2024, you might be eligible to receive a settlement check.

The legal action, initially filed in late 2022 and later amended in 2023, accused Walmart of inflating prices on sold-by-weight products, including those associated with the retailer's discounts, or "rollbacks."

The legal filing claimed that customers were misled during checkout, leading them to believe they were paying reduced prices for items like meats, poultry, and seafood.

Additionally, it was alleged that Walmart incorrectly labeled the weight of bagged produce such as oranges, grapefruit, and tangerines, inaccurately stating the weight as higher than the actual weight of these items.

Last year, Walmart agreed to a settlement amounting to $45 million to be distributed to customers. Despite this settlement, Walmart maintained its stance of denying any wrongdoing.

In a statement, Walmart expressed its commitment to offering customers everyday low prices to help them save on desired products. Walmart continued to deny the allegations but believed that reaching a settlement was advantageous for both parties involved.

As per the terms outlined in the settlement, any Walmart shopper who purchased weighted goods or bagged citrus items at a Walmart store, supercenter, or neighborhood market in the United States or Puerto Rico between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024, may qualify for a cash payment.

The settlement fund amounts to $45 million, with certain customers potentially receiving up to $500 in compensation.

Cash Settlement for the Deceptive Pricing

Eligible individuals can complete and submit a claim form either online or via mail. The submission deadline for these forms is June 5, 2024, and they must be postmarked by this date or submitted online by the specified deadline.

Upon approval, customers will receive their payments electronically through platforms such as Venmo, Zelle, ACH, or a virtual pre-paid MasterCard. Alternatively, those who prefer a traditional method can opt for a paper check if they are unable to receive electronic payments.

The payment amounts vary depending on the purchases made during the Settlement Class Period.

The settlement website outlines that the cash payments are subject to potential pro rata adjustments based on the number of valid claim forms submitted and a supplemental distribution.

Here are the potential cash payment amounts based on different scenarios:

$10: If the customer does not have proof of purchase but attests to purchasing up to 50 weighted goods and/or bagged citrus items in-person during the Settlement Class Period.
$15: If the customer does not have proof of purchase but attests to purchasing 51-75 weighted goods and/or bagged citrus items in-person during the Settlement Class Period.
$20: If the customer does not have proof of purchase but attests to purchasing 76-100 weighted goods and/or bagged citrus items in-person during the Settlement Class Period.
$25: If the customer does not have proof of purchase but attests to purchasing 101 or more weighted goods and/or bagged citrus items in-person during the Settlement Class Period.
Up to $500: If the customer can provide proof of purchase for each weighted good and/or bagged citrus item bought in-person during the Settlement Class Period and has the purchase amount for each item, they will receive 2% of the total cost of these substantiated purchases, up to a maximum of $500.

Customers who do not have their receipts readily available may be able to retrieve them from Walmart's website for submission.
