Project M, 'Super Smash Bros' Beloved Mod Comes to a Halt

Nintendo's “Super Smash Bros” is already a famous game characterized by imaginative brawls between different characters from various games, fought in various stages. By now, players would be familiar with “Project M,” a well-loved mod that attempts to bring improvements to the game for some years already. Sadly, this mod has come to a screeching halt.

Wired reported that the mod, which was geared towards giving the game some tournament play, was shut down by its developers “effective immediately.”

What started as a collaboration project between people who loved fighting games six years ago has become one of the largest game communities, reaching out to different countries. However, with the mod's developers' announcement, fans are expected to receive quite a shock.

Here's what the Project M Development team said in their website:

“Project M and its community have grown larger than any of us ever anticipated, and it’s truly heartwarming to see all of the unforgettable connections and friendships that have been forged through this project.

“Unfortunately, we’re here to say that we’re at the end of that road.”

Engadget reported that Project M's latest version, ver. 3.6, should still be playable. Those who were able to download it will still be able to play it, along with the countless additions that have been added to it. All these should not just disappear, however there will be no more new updates.

The PMDev team acknowledged that the news have come as a shock to all Project M fans.

“Please, forgive us,” they wrote. “Again, it’s been an excruciating call to make, but it’s been made a bit easier by our satisfaction with the previous and final release, v3.6.”

Contrary to what people might think, Project M hasn't had problems with “Smash Bros” maker Nintendo. Kotaku reported that the latter didn't issue a “Cease and Desist” order to the mod's developers, giving them freedom to develop the mod and let it run for at least six years.

In a tweet, the PMDev team's lawyer Ryan Morrison said “We weren't contacted, issued a C&D, threatened or had legal action taken against us in any way, but we want it to stay that way.”

The Project M developers said that instead of letting the mod continue, they will be focusing “work on new projects, built from the ground up.” Although that might sound exciting to everyone who knows how Project M looks, feels and sounds, the developers gave no idea as to what they will be focusing on.

“Thank you for playing!” the PMDev team said.
