'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay' Prequel Plans, Franchise Isn't Over

"The Hunger Games" series has certainly made a lot of money that the production company is planning to do a prequel of the franchise. Several film companies in Hollywood today can only wish for the kind of success Lionsgate enjoys with Katniss Everdeen and the crew gave them across the four episodes.

"Hunger Games" is so popular to the masses that the combined gross for the first three installments is over $2 billion. The last installment, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2," is currently making $227 million in the United States alone while the global gross could be higher than the U.S. figure, according to the report by Variety.

The production company, Lionsgate, hit the jackpot with the series and it figured out that a prequel of the franchise could make them earn more.

Michael Burns, the vice chairman of Lionsgate Entertainment, said on Tuesday that younger viewers want more arena battles from the movie and he thinks that it is a good idea to make another "Hunger Games" movie with action that will make fans flock at the theaters once the planned prequel comes out. He also cited that, if given a chance, the production would have decided on more arenas in past installments.

Nevertheless, Burns explained that they want people to get the main purpose of the story, which not promoting violence.

"Whatever extensions of 'The Hunger Games' brand we pursue, the intent is not to glorify violence by arbitrarily telling arena stories, but to continue Suzanne Collins's exploration of the concepts of just war theory," the Lionsgate Entertainment vice chairman said.

Meanwhile, the company also wants to venture out from its other big movie franchises such as "Twilight" and the action packed, "The Expendables." The company is certainly moving towards the direction of extending their movie series, according to Hollywood Reporter.

The CEO of the company, Jon Feltheimer, revealed that they are considering many ideas on how they can extend the "Hunger Games" franchise to give more fans something to get excited about and, at the same time, continue on making good amount of money from it. It is reported that, in 2016, there will be a "Hunger Games" stage show along with other projects such as theme parks named after the movie, Slash Film reported.

Fans were definitely treated with a good story line of the "Hunger Games" that Lionsgate can feel the urge of extending the series.
