Parents Furious After Nurse Accidentally Cut-Off Their Baby's Toe

A nurse accidentally cut-off infant's toe while cutting away a tape. Now, furious parents are considering legal action against the hospital.

Erica Hogue, the mother of the twins, Davante and Delante, said she delivered her sons via cesarean section at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque at just 29 weeks. Her twins are now 8 months old and she already took home Delante, but Davante was left behind at the hospital and had to face some "grueling medical challenges."

"They told us they could let him go because he got a stage-3 brain bleed," the mother explained to KOB 4. Mrs Hogue further said that the hospital told her that Davante may never hear, see, talk nor walk due to his brain bleed. But the couple is still determined to continue fighting for their son.

At the young age, Davante had to face tracheotomy, continuous intubation and g-tube surgery. In addition, he may also have a hole on his heart as disclosed by the mother.

Then another very unfortunate incident occurred in December, Davante's attending nurse placed an IV on his foot. Hence, while cutting away a tape, the nurse accidentally cut-off the baby's left pinky toe.

An orthopedic surgeon attended the little boy and tried to save the boy's toe. The doctor stitched the boy's toe, then placed him in a leg cast. However, the hospital informed Mrs Hogue that they could no longer return her son's toe as the blood circulation could not be returned.

"It just makes me angry that something like this could happen," the mother exclaimed. Since the incident, Mrs Hogue said the hospital has launched an investigation to solve the matter and has apologized to her family for the disturbing incident. However, she said that an apology is not enough, "For me, that is just not enough. I believe that my baby is worth so much more than that."

Mrs Hogue said her priority right now is to take her son home are they are now considering some legal actions against the hospital.
