How To Prevent Common Child Accidents At Home

Safety is always one of the parent's priority at home for their child or children. Accidents do happen, but there are ways to prevent it and proper ways on how dealing with it.

At home, you should know the possible hazards and make sure you have proofing measures applied to avoid accidents especially to children.

According to NHS Choices, there are 2 million children under 15 that are brought in to accident and emergency (A&E) each year because of injuries that happened at home and half of this total count are under 5 years of age. There are ways to prevent accidents at home and some safety measures we can apply that are very effective.

Here are the very common children accidents at home and ways on how to prevent these to happen:

Falling

Children loves to run around the house, climb on chairs, sofas and tables during their playtime. Parents often call their child's attention to stop or refrain from doing it but there are times we are unable to notice and that's where falling accidents can possibly happen.

For tripping and slip accidents, Mother&Baby suggested to avoid placing Cloth floor mats on places where kids usually play. Fix carpets that are damaged or worn because these are the common causes of trips.

For two level falls, keep chairs away from kids because they will likely use it for playing. Don't place their toys on a high place because they might find a way to climb to get it and may cause fall accidents.

Burns and Scalds

Common causes of this are electrical burns, hot water/drinks, stoves, and gas igniting materials or tools. For electrical accidents, make sure your electrical outlets are covered or with plug in protectors. Toddlers might stick something in to the outlets that can cause injuries.

Keep your fire igniting materials or tools like cigarette lighters, Gas ignition flame lighters and etc. in a safe place that is out of children's reach. Always warn your child not to use the stove and ask assistance from adults when heating liquids or drinks.

 Cuts and eye injuries

These are commonly caused by sharp edged or pointed objects. It's not good to give your child some toys that has sharp edges or pointed toys because without proper handling, it can cause them harm.

Avoid placing empty glasses on the table and keep ceramic furniture or vases away from children. If these thing break, this can possible cause cuts on feet or in their hands.

Drowning

Kids love to play with water during bathing time. According to BabyCenter, drowing is one of the leading cause of accidental deaths. Never leave a child unsupervised because even with just few centimeters of water, they can drown.

Add safety measures around your garden ponds if you have one to avoid them playing near it. Empty big water containers inside or outside the house.
