A Minneapolis woman was sentenced to 23 years of imprisonment for the fatal crash that killed one teenage girl and injured several other people last year.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Latalia Margalli, drove her vehicle into a crowd in downtown Minneapolis. In May, she pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree unintentional murder and five counts of second-degree assault.

Woman Sentenced to Prison Over Fatal Crash

The defendant was found to be among a group of people who were fighting at the intersection of Fifth Street and Hennepin Avenue on Sept. 14, 2024. Margalli reportedly left the scene before driving her car and ramming through a crowd of about a dozen individuals.

Authorities revealed that the victims included 16-year-old De'Miaya Broome, who was later hospitalized and pronounced dead, and five others who were injured. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and anyone who was affected by the tragedy, according to CBS News.

He added that the 23-year prison sentence against the Minneapolis woman holds her accountable and protects the community. The Hennepin County judge who handed down the prison sentence for Margalli credited her 284 days that she had already served in custody.

The injured victims were later identified as two 14-year-old girls, a 24-year-old man, a 28-year-old man, and a 29-year-old woman. Court records showed that their wounds range from simple bruises to broken legs and a head injury, Fox9 reported.

Finding Closure

The dead teenager's father, Juan Broome, said, "Somebody said, you know, y'all have closure on this, but I don't think you ever get closure behind some of this." He added that they are trying to heal, but argued that the incident tore his family apart.

The mother, Andrea Broome, said that even if the sentencing of their daughter's killer is finished, the couple will never have closure over their girl's death. However, she said that she was grateful for the more than 15-year sentence that was given to Margalli.

The teen's mother added that she knew in the end that the judge presiding over the case would see all of the people who were affected by the tragedy, as per MPR News.

A similar incident involved two teenagers who died following the fiery Pompano Beach rollover crash on Friday. One of the victims was the driver of the vehicle, a 16-year-old, and the other was 17-year-old Richard Grable III, whose father confirmed that his son died of severe brain damage.
