An Alaska School District sparked backlash after opting out of including Veterans Day on its official calendar, and instead referred to the holiday as a "student release professional development day."
A GOP candidate, Bernadette Wilson, who is running as a Republican to lead the Last Frontier State, slammed the school district for its decision. She said that the idea of not including Veterans Day on their annual calendar is "absolutely unacceptable."
School District Erases Veterans Day From Calendar
The lawmaker added that indoctrination and woke ideology are still prevalent in the modern education system. Wilson claimed that there is a "huge effort" right now to indoctrinate kids, saying it can be seen in how low students' test scores are dropping.
On the other hand, the school district did post on social media on Veterans Day, saying, "the Anchorage School District extends our deepest gratitude to the veterans in our schools, families, and community for their courage, sacrifice, and dedication," according to Fox News.
Despite the school district's post about veterans, Wilson quickly pointed out that it was the same school system that recently attached disclaimers ot pamphlets of the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence. In them, it said the district "does not endorse" the viewpoints held in America's founding documents.
The GOP lawmaker later criticized the Alaska school district over claims that the disclaimer was added by accident. She said that officials do not have the luxury of mistakenly avoiding allegiance with the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.
Wilson claims that it was no accident, but that the school district was caught and changed its stance to apologize. The lawmaker said that should she be elected as governor of Alaska, she would work on various initiatives that would "embolden parents" and strengthen schools, WHMI reported.
Empowering Parents
She said that it is important to empower parents, whether that be with educational savings accounts or other options. Wilson highlighted the need to continue the discussions to embolden parents to be able to utilize the options that are available to them, as per AOL News.
In September, Wilson announced that State Senator and Veteran Mike Shower would join her gubernatorial campaign. She previously led the Republican field in the first two publicly released polls and received an endorsement from Congressman Byron Donalds.
She said that Shower is a "deeply respected conservative leader" who has conviction and integrity when he was working in the Alaska legislature. The senator is an Air Force veteran who served the United States for 24 years.
