Did Selena Gomez Copy 'Hands To Myself' Music Video Concept? '13 Reasons Why' Producer Gets Tom McCarthy For Netflix Series

"Hands To Myself" singer Selena Gomez, fresh off the debacle of being linked to Angelina Jolie's husband Brad Pitt, hits a high note with new Netflix series "13 Reasons Why." The Netflix offering scored "Spotlight," "The Visitor" director Tom McCarthy for the opening episodes.

Happily, too, the reports that connected Selena Gomez with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt being on the brink of divorce have been cleared. Selena Gomez and Brad Pitt simply co-starred in the positively reviewed "The Big Short." Allegations added color to an encounter between Selena Gomez and Brad Pitt after the Golden Globe awards. The stories extended to pull Angelina Jolie into a triangle with Brad Pitt and Selena Gomez. However, Brad Pitt and Selena Gomez have not hooked up. Neither are Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt divorcing.

The buzz mill never stops, however, with "Hands To Myself" and Selena once again pulled into controversy. Inquistr reports that the integrity of the music video for "Hands To Myself" has been questioned, with allusions to Selena Gomez copying the video's idea from another source.

According to the media outlet, claims have been made by one Lambert Moberly that Selena's "Hands To Myself" is a direct plagiarism of Moberly's original concept for an independent film called "My Beautiful Stalker." Selena Gomez allegedly came across Moberly's "My Beautiful Stalker" because Selena would have played the film's female lead Mia and therefore got to read the screenplay.

Comparing plots between "My Beautiful Stalker" and "Hands To Myself," the Lambert Moberly's concept revolved around Selena's alleged would-be role. The character, Mia, becomes the stalker of ex-boyfriend Josh, whom she dumped, after she found out that Josh had moved on to a new relationship.

"Hands To Myself," on the other hand, has Selena Gomez in a role of a fan who stalks her a famous actor and breaks into his house in hopes of seducing him. Selena Gomez's character gets arrested for trespassing before the video reveals that Selena is actually also an actor and the whole scene is part of a movie in which Selena and the actor are co-stars.

In an earlier interview, Entertainment Weekly reports that Madonna's "Truth Or Dare" was the actual inspiration for "Hands To Myself." For this reason, Selena Gomez asked Madonna's director for "Truth Or Dare," Alek Keshishian, to direct "Hands To Myself." While "Hands To Myself" does not display obvious traces of Madonna's "Truth Or Dare," Keshishian's style is visible. For his part, Alek Keshishian says he is pleased to have worked with Selena.

Speaking of directors, Deadline Hollywood reports that the new Netflix TV series "13 Reasons Why," which Selena Gomez produces, will have Oscar-nominated actor/director Tom McCarthy to helm the first two episodes of the series. "13 Reasons Why" is an adaptation of the young adult novel "Thirteen Reasons Why" by author Jay Asher.

Tom McCarthy is also the executive producer for “13 Reasons Why.” Brian Yorkey, himself a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner, is the creator and writer for the 13 episodes of the series. Selena Gomez, however, will not act in “13 Reasons Why.”
