New Study Claims Transgender Kids Who Are Open About Their Sexuality Would Perform Well In Life

Scientists found out from their latest research that transgender children who came out early about their sexuality and are allowed to be themselves are less likely to suffer from any mental disorder. Based on their study, transgender children who are accepted by their parents for their gender decision are also of low risk when it comes to having symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Kristina Olson, director of TransYouth Project at the University of Washington, headed this study that is opening a lot of minds regarding the LGBTQ community. In an article published by Reuters, Olson said, "This finding is quite surprising given that, to date, nearly all studies of young gender diverse kids show that they have much higher rates of depression and anxiety than other children."

Olson's team used 73 transgender kids from 3 to 12 years of age and they added 49 more of these transgenders siblings and 73 non-transgenders of the same age bracket and gender identity. The result has shocked the people involved in the study.

The Olympian also reported the result of the research stating that the support of the family has a lot to do with the mental health of a transgender child, especially during transition. The risks of having suicidal behavior are high for those transgender kids who are not allowed to come out or transition to the kind of gender that they want to have.

Parents who are supportive of their children coming out like even being okay for them to match the outfits and behavior to their desired gender are apparently less likely to worry about their child's mental health.

Coming out as a transgender has been an ongoing issue for years and there are still some who cannot accept them as a normal part of the society. But these days, there are a lot of people who are more open about the LGBTQ community and that they too have equal rights along with heterosexual human beings.
