Weight Loss: Here's How Veteran Actor John Goodman Dropped 100 Lbs

Veteran actor John Goodman, 63, was seen stepping out of LAX Monday looking fitter and slimmer. The "Monsters, Inc." star was at his heaviest at 400 lbs. at least, but his weight loss process is obviously a success after dropping more than 100 lbs. and counting.

The actor drew attention to his slimmer physique at the "Trumbo" premiere in London last October and while admitting that he struggled with yo-yo dieting and trying to lose weight in the past, he's able to maintain a good weight loss plan these days. He's had the help of health coach Mackie Shilstone, but the path to a healthier body didn't happen overnight, he told Men's Health.

Goodman and Shilstone, who has trained many athletes, started the actor's fitness plan in 2010, when he essentially lost 100 lbs. "I did a lot of cardio at home. Forty minutes of cardio in the morning and 40 in the afternoon," he said. "I can only do the elliptical and the recumbent bike. I used to walk a lot. But the knees kicked in."

A former alcoholic, Goodman has since ditched the vice. He also changed his attitude towards food, given that he also has a history of diabetes in the family. He prepares smoothies "with some protein powder, whey powder and fruits," which he mixes with soy milk and yogurt since he is lactose intolerant. He's also into the Mediterranean diet, enjoying lots of fish and fresh green vegetables.

Once in a while, Goodman does indulge, especially when there are celebrations like Christmas or the Fourth of July. But his trainer mostly credits Goodman for actually wanting to keep the weight off.

"There needs to be strategic planning. This time, he really wanted to do it," Shilstone said, via Hollywood Life.

"It takes a lot creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you're going to eat next...I wanted to live life better," declared the actor about his weight loss goals, via People.
