Items At Home That Are Hazardous To Your Pets

It's no doubt that pet owners want to make sure their pets are safe and always in good health. Some people consider their pets as part of their family so it is important for them to keep their home hazard-free for their pets.

According to a recent post from Aol lifestyle page, not everyone is aware that there are actually things at home that are dangerous to their pets. Although some pets are smart enough to know what are hazardous for them but they are still generally dependent to their owners in almost everything.

Here is a list of items that can be found at home which are very hazardous to your pets.

1.      Antifreeze - it is an additive to a liquid solution to decrease its freezing point. As pointed out by The Human Society page, this is commonly used in the water cooler for car engines and mostly kept in the house garage. This liquid additive contains ethylene glycol which is deadly to animals if ingested.

2.      Opened cans (Can goods) - Dogs and cats have a strong sense of smell and they are likely to scavenge in the trash bins if not guarded. They might cut their tongue or mouth when licking on the substance left inside the opened can that has sharp edges. Worst thing that can happen is they can get infection.

3.      Some foods and spices - It's commonly known that chocolates are deadly to canines and felines. It is because of its toxic component called theobromine according to Royal Society of Chemistry. Avocado and grapes are fruits that are also dangerous to your pets. Spices like onions and garlic are also toxic to pets.

4.      Some flowers - Lilies are deadly to cats. There is a substance in lilies if ingested, can cause kidney failure and takes effect within 36 to 72 hours.

5.      Small toys - Those toys that your baby are playing are very attractive to dogs. It easily gets their attention and they will play with it. These are choking hazards.

6.      Garden herbicides and pesticides - These can be found in your garden. These contain chemicals that are deadly to animals. Keep these in a safe place away from pets.

7.      Rat poisons - These poison foods or baits are specially designed to be tasty for rats. Your pets might mistakenly eat it thinking that it's a cat or dog food. This will surely have a lethal effect on your house pets.

To make your house hazard free for your pets, just remember to keep items that contain deadly chemicals in a safe place and try to give some extra time to check on your pets every day.
