Unusual Pregnancy: Twins with Different Fathers Born in Vietnam

Scientists in Vietnam were startled after confirming a case of bi-paternal twins. The parents of the twins got curious as they both grew up looking very different with very minimal genetic resemblance.

Experts from the Center for Genetic Analysis and Technologies in Vietnam's capital, Hanoi confirmed the first case of bi-paternal twins in the country, according to CNN's report. Le Dinh Luong, the president of the Genetic Association in Vietnam stated that the parents took the twins to the center as they were pressured by extended family members after they were baffled on why the twins have very little to no genetic resemblance.

After seeing the twins, the experts conducted a series of DNA tests wherein it was confirmed that they were both born out of different fathers. The family thought that there was a mix up at the hospital on where the twins were born, but it was confirmed that they both came from the same mother. Luong declined to give out specific details regarding the family's background as he is bound to protect the patient's confidentiality.

The twins are already two years old and  from the province of Hao Binh. One sibling was born with a thick wavy hair while the other was born with straight thin hair. It is a rare case of bi-paternal twins and it is the first case in Vietnam, according to reports.

Though it may seem a bit peculiar for twins to have different fathers, Baby Center noted that it is actually possible. It was cited that two eggs from the same mother were released during the ovulation period which is then fertilized by the sperm of different fathers. It was also mentioned that there is only 1 out of 400 chances that a woman can have bi-paternal twins.
