Time To Move On: How Can You Get Your Child to Sleep In His Own Bed?

There are a lot of reasons why some children prefer to sleep in the same bed as their parents. However, at some point, the adults have to draw a line and let their child move into the big kid's bed.

There is no "best" time to do this, but one thing is for sure, it's going to be a big transition for your child. This is why you have to be patient with him during the first few weeks or months. Here are a few tips to make the move easier on both of you:

Make sure that there is a regular bedtime routine. Whatever it is that your child does before going to sleep, make sure to follow the same routine when he moves to his new bed. This way, they won't be too overwhelmed with the changes.

Point out other kids with "big kid" beds. Whether it's his older siblings or cousins, pointing out the possibility of moving to his own big bed will get him excited at the prospect. Another way to introduce the idea, according to Aha! Parenting, is by reading to him stories about big beds. An example is Rita Bergstein's "Your Own Big Bed."

If possible, let your child pick his bed. Scary Mommy noted that allowing your child to have an active role in the transition will make him feel safe and secure. When you let him choose his bed and beddings, he will also feel that he is in control of the situation, and will make transitioning easier.

Keep the bed in the same place as you did the crib. Moving around can be a big transition to toddlers, so try to make the room look as similar as possible. Also ask your toddler whether or not he wants to see his crib leave the room to avoid any upsets.

Don't forget about comfort and safety items. Moving to a new bed is stressful enough as it is, so don't take away your child's comfort blanket or toy if he feels like he still wants them near. Remember it is important that your child feels safe on his own. For your part and own peace of mind, this will also be the time to invest in side rails for the bed, as well as a couple of night-lights.
