La Liga Updates: Gareth Bale Just Breaks Lineker's Goal Record Without Knowing It

Gareth Bale recently broke a La Liga goal record without realizing it. The Real Madrid forward became the all-time leading British goal scorer in La Liga on Sunday, March 20, 2016.

Previously, Gary Lineker of Barcelona held the record for the most La Liga goals with 42 in 103 games, played between 1986 and 1989. Bale scored 43 in 76 games, after Real Madrid was victorious against Sevilla with a final score of 4-0. Lineker congratulated his fellow Englishman on Twitter.

Yahoo Sports reveals that according to Bale, he was unaware that he broke Lineker’sLa Ligarecord after scoring the goal. He only realized that he became the No. 1 British goal scorer on the team after he turned his mobile device on and found several messages from friends congratulating him in his new La Ligaachievement.

Bale, 26, recently came off an injury and will be skipping Wales’ friendlies in March 2016. He said that he is very happy and the new La Liga record gives him joy. At present, it is important for him to improve. Bale also stated on the club’s official website that they have to keep trying to improve. They had a good result and have to continue what they are doing and maintain the rhythm. He added that it was good to have the entireLa Liga squad available and that they enjoyed having everyone present.

"We knew that it would be a difficult game today, we played very good and we have to continue like this in the rest of the games. We're working a lot and we hope to give everything in each game. I'm not going away with the national team, I'll stay here with other players and I'll train to be at 100 percent,” Bale stated on the La Liga website.

In 2013, Bale transferred from Tottenham Hotspur to the Bernabeu for €100 million.

After Bale and Lineker, John Aldridge is at No. 3 with 33 goals, followed by Steve Archibald with 24, Laurie Cunningham with 16, Alan Campbell with 15 and Michael Owen and David Beckham with 13, respectively. Gareth Bale is expected to widen the gap as he continues to play in La Liga.
