Parenting Opinions: Parents Reveal The Downside Of The Common Core Worksheets

The Common Core standard has been making rounds in the parenting world as the pros and cons are being tackled. Parents with children going to public schools in the U.S. should not worry as it was cleared out that Common Core is just a standard and not a curriculum.

According to Mom.Me, parents should not fret as Common Core is not an educational curriculum. There are several points that parents need to understand when it comes to Common Core, Janine Remillard of the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education cited that Common Core is focused on teaching flexibility as the Common Core Sheet changes every year.

An article from Daily Caller discussed the dismay of parents against the Common Core's contents on most of its worksheet materials. 45 stated and the District of Columbia has already embraced the Common Core State Standards, having it applied in their public schools. The Common Core standards focus on providing consistency on terms of math and language arts. Though it may seem like an advance step in providing children quality education, the materials, however, back-lashed.

Most comments coming from parents cited that the instructions were not clear enough for their children to comprehend. It was also cited that math problems intended for preschoolers are impossible to solve as it is supposed to be given to third graders.

As some mentioned the cons of the Common Core standards, there are those who appreciate the contents. As per U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan however, those who tend to complain are the ones that aren't prepared to accept their child's learning capabilities in grasping the Common Core standards, as mentioned by the Washington Post.

"It's fascinating to me that some of the pushback is coming from, sort of, white suburban moms who - all of a sudden - their child isn't as brilliant as they thought they were and their school isn't quite as good as they thought they were, and that's pretty scary," Duncan stated. "You've bet your house and where you live and everything on, 'My child's going to be prepared.' That can be a punch in the gut."
