Suffering From Sinusitis? Here Are 5 Best Solutions For Sinus Problems

Sinus problems are often caused by common colds, allergies or a sinus infection. While it is best to visit your doctor right away, most of these home remedies can cure sinus pain and pressure without the need for prescribed medications.

Sinusitis is one of the most common conditions where antibiotics are often prescribed. However, taking decongestants can do your more harm than good.

Jordan S. Josephson, M.D., a nasal and endoscopic sinus surgeon from New York City, said that it is not recommended to take in decongestants more than once within 12 hours, as reported by Huffington Post. More so, it should only be used for a day or two.

As it turns out, decongestants can create side effects that could pose adverse risks on your heart. So to help you avoid decongestants, try these home remedies we've gathered from Everyday Health and Huffington Post.

Irrigate Daily

It is recommended to flush your nasal passages daily. Both websites recommend the use of a Neti Pot. "That will keep you from getting sinus infections and will also control allergies," says Dr. Josephson.

The saline solution via a Neti Pot will wash out the nasal passages. You may use a ready-made saline solution or you can make one yourself: 1 teaspoon of salt, a pinch of baking soda and two cups of warm distilled water.

Vibrate & Take A Steam

Use a massager or vibrator to help loosen and dislodge thick mucus. Set the vibrator to low and run it along your cheekbones and bone toward your nose to open up the maxillary sinuses.

Do this for a few minutes, then put your head over a bowl of hot water mixed with a sprig or two of herbs like thyme, peppermint and oregano mixed together. Put a towel over your head to catch the steam and massage your face once more.

Stop Smoking

"It literally burns the inside of your nose, and leads to vasoconstriction," explains Dr. Josephson. Smoking destroys the cilia, the little hair-like structures that move mucus up your nasal passage and down your throat. Without cilia, mucus can stay in the nose promoting irritation and inflammation.

Clean Your Environment

Make sure your house is allergy-proof. Remember to change bed sheets and curtains regularly and wipe blinds down with a wet cloth. Install an air filter system if you have any allergy problems. "Clean with bleach when you can. It kills mold quickly," says Dr. Josephson.

Drink Up

Stay hydrated all the time. Water keeps your sinuses moist but best to avoid caffeine or alcoholic drinks. It is recommended to take eight 8-ounce glasses each day. If the color of your urine is clear, that means you're well hydrated.

If you're still having sinus problems after three days of trying home remedies, it is recommended to see your doctor immediately. Check out this video for other remedies for sinus problems:
