Sean 'Diddy' Combs Net Worth: Why Is Rap Mogul Opening A Harlem Charter School?

Sean "Diddy" Combs, the rap mogul and top-selling hip-hop music artist, is about to become a headmaster in a charter school. The music star is venturing into education as he announced plans to open a school in Harlem in August 2016. Enrollees are already being accepted.

Combs revealed that he's invested at the Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School in the New York borough. The plan has been six years in the making and the school received its approval from the Department of Education last year, per The Wall Street Journal.

The school will be managed by Steve Perry for Sean "Diddy" Combs, whom the rapper approached as early as 2011 for his plans to establish the institution. Perry has managed other charter schools in the east and insisted that the rapper went into this whole thing quietly. "It's important to note it was he who inspired our team to come in and expand into New York," said Perry via New York Times. The education doctor and the rap mogul met and discussed extensively for years to ensure that all plans are set.

The Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School follows the system already established in Hartford. It is well-known for its high turnover of graduates who get into prestigious universities in America, per its official site. There are currently 160 slots for sixth and seventh grade students who plan to enroll this fall at the Harlem charter. Eventually, the school will expand this to 700 slots until the twelfth grade. Applications are currently being considered and the school is also looking at adding more staff.

Combs said that it has been his life-long dream to open a school and he's doing this to give back to his community. The rapper is a Harlem native, who was born and raised in Mount Vernon. "I want to impact the lives of young people in my community, and build future leaders. The first step is offering access to a quality education," the rapper said in a statement, per People. "Every young person should have the tools they need to succeed. All our children should be able to pursue their dreams. That is something I can impact with this school."

Sean "Diddy" Combs' net worth was pegged at $735 million in 2015, per Forbes.
