Boxing News & Update: Overweight Adrien Broner Lost His WBA Super-Lightweight Title

Adrien Broner lost his WBA junior welterweight belt on Thursday. The boxer failed to make weight for his fight Friday against Ashley Theophane.

According to Boxing Junkie, the sanctioning body vacated the WBA junior welterweight title after the overweight Broner (31-2, 23 KOs) failed to meet the weight maximum limit. But there is also good news for Adrien Broner.

After Broner's lawyer assured the Hamilton (Ohio) County Prosecutor's office he will turn himself in on Monday, the boxer was licensed to fight by the Washington D.C. Boxing Commission. After being charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault in connection with a January incident outside a bowling alley in Madisonville, Ohio, Broner is wanted by Cincinnati authorities.

While his family remains in Ohio, Broner has been training for several weeks in Washington. He has yet to meet his daughter, who was born earlier this month.

Broner no longer has his belt after he failed to make weight for his next fight. He weighed in at 140.4 pounds while the limit for the WBA junior welterweight boxing category is set at 140 pounds.

When he stepped off the scale, Broner gulped down some Gatorade and stormed out without talking. It seems that he made no effort to lose the extra weight. Ravone Littlejohn, Broner's spokesman, refused to comment on the weight issue.

When asked if Broner missing weight was embarrassing to their promotion, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe said, "yeah, it is, but things happen. He added that while this is unfortunate, you have to deal with this kind of things and move forward.

Mike Stafford, Broner's trainer, also said that his fighter just wants to move on. Broner lost another title on the scale in 2012, when he missed weight one other time.

Despite being stripped of his title, after having a very bad week, Adrien Broner at least finished it with a bright spot. On Friday, in the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions card at the DC Armory, Broner achieved a dominating, ninth-round knockout victory of Ashley Theophane, according to ESPN. After his victory, Broner called out retired superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr.
