‘Mortal Kombat XL' Pro Tournament Begins April; $500K In Prizes At Stake

A new professional tournament series of “Mortal Kombat XL” was announced by Warner Bros. on Mar. 30, 2016. The contest is set to happen in April 2016.

Game creator Ed Boon initially teased the pro tournament on Twitter a day before the big announcement.

“Mortal Kombat has always been about friends going head-to-head in 'couch competition.' With Mortal Kombat X, these players now have multiple ways of jumping into the tournament scene to prove their skills and win cash," said Boon.

The prize pool will consist of $500,000, the ESL Mortal Kombat X Pro League Season 3, the ESL Challenger Cup and local tournaments held all over North America and Europe.

The online season will start on Apr. 3, 2016 and continue in the next eight weeks. Players will fight one another on PlayStation 4. In the end, there will be 16 finalists across Europe, North America, Latin America, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), who will go to Burbank, California for a live tournament on June 12, 2016. The prize pool for the June event will be $200,000, to be handed out to the eight finalists.

VG247 reports that the ESL Mortal Kombat X Challenger Cup will commence on Apr. 2, 2016. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One gamers who will not join the ESL Pro League can still participate online to earn cash and prizes. The open tournaments across, Europe, North America, CIS and Latin America will happen every week until the end of June 2016. The monthly finals will have live-streaming. .

Boon added that the project is their biggest commitment to the e-sports scene. They have newly improved online experience and expect to find intense battles at the different tournaments that they support.

Game Spot noted that gamers can now purchase the Blue Steel Sub-Zero or the new character skinKrimsonErmac from Xbox Marketplace or PlayStation Store. Part of the proceeds will be allocated to boosting future prize pools of “Mortal Kombat X” in the near future.

Warner Bros. and Netherrealm Studios will support the local “Mortal Kombat X” tournaments all over Europe and North America.

“Mortal Kombat XL” is the latest version of the hit fighting game. players can choose from several variations of each character, which will affect their combat style and strategy. The title includes the main game as well as all the available DLCs.
