Netflix Adds More Kids-Oriented Programs

Streaming service Netflix is set to add more shows to attract young viewers. The company attributed its success to children and young audience.

According to Arkansas Online, 75 million members of the largest streaming service watch children's shows and movies. The company said securing these viewers at a young age will make them loyal to Netflix until they get old.

"We have a ton of data on what they watch, so we know what properties resonate and when they don't—when [viewers] have had enough of a franchise and when they can't get enough of it," said Netflix director of global content for children Andy Yeatman. "We always try to feed that demand so they always want more."

It was also noted that of the 70 new original shows, 20 will be cartoon series specifically tailored for children. Some of these offerings include a show on magic teen mermaids and a remake of an '80s animation.

Arkansas Online highlighted that the investment on more shows for kids was done at a time when viewers, including children, are offered a lot of shows to choose from whether on television or online. However, Netflix said this is an important move for them to further boost their success.

In a similar report, The New Zealand Herald said Netflix is not only targeting kids but also viewers of all ages. "Our goal is to have everyone in the household's favourite show: the young kid in preschool, the teenager, the parents," said Yeatman.

He added that by focusing on the satisfaction of children, parents will "feel great" with how their Netflix bill was put to good use. Despite more shows available for children, Netflix has allowed parents to set parental controls for the show. The streaming service, as per The New Zealand Herald, this will help filter the viewing preferences of children and avoid them from streaming adult content shows on the website.
