Sex Education To Include Fertility Lessons For Young Schoolgirls: Experts Warn Of Its Effects

British Fertility Society's Fertility Education Taskforce wants sex education to include fertility lessons to be part of the national curriculum for young schoolgirls. Professor Adam Balen, chair of BFS, aims to make girls as young as 11 years old to be aware of the risks of starting a family late.

Biological Clock

According to Daily Mail, Balen said along with teaching about contraception, young students must also be taught of the right time to have a child. He also intends to make girls be more conscious of their biological clock.

It seems a lot of girls are not informed how fast their biological clock runs as they aged. Balen is worried about the growing numbers of middle-aged women who still don't have a child, which is twice as much in two generations.

Fertility

Women of today intend to have a child at the age of 35 and up rather than the young age of 25. In fact, women who are giving birth at 40 and 40-plus are increasing in the last 20 years.

Hence, Balen wants to give young girls fertility lessons to save the young women's of today to the possible causes of infertility. However, Balen is also opting to let the boys be involved with the issue as creating a family starts with couples.

Effects

Clinical psychologist Dr. David Holmes, on the other hand, believes pressuring a young girl at an early age of 11 about having a child early is quite damaging. In fact, stressing about fertility to an adult makes them uneasy, what more to the developing brain of a kid, as per Telegraph.

"Imposing a priority like that on an 11-year old, which they can't act on for a great many years - and at a time when they're already starting to struggle with hormones is unfair" Holmes explained. He further said kids of this age have more things to think about than worrying to have a child early.

"The other problem is that they will exaggerate the importance of what they're being told because they aren't able to apply the same logic as an adult," Holmes added. The physician believes fertility lessons must be left alone to adults who need this kind of information more.
