GoPro Introduces Virtual Reality Channel To Support 360-Degree Videos

Action camera manufacturer GoPro has launched a new channel to cater virtual reality videos. The company hopes to share 360-degree videos taken by GoPro action cameras through this channel.

Independent said the channel launched on Monday is now a medium for users to view and also share videos. It was noted that the site looks a lot like the 360-degree video player Kolor Eyes which GoPro launched in 2015.

It was added in the same report that aside from the website, the VR channel will also provide support for Android and iOS applications. Independent said the channel will also come with professionally shot and edited GoPro videos.

Upon checking the website, it was observed that GoPro has already uploaded sample 360-degree videos for their users. They also encouraged people to use the channel to share videos of their adventures and travels online.

"GoPro helps people capture and share their lives' most meaningful experiences with others—to celebrate them together," GoPro founder and CEO Nicholas Woodman said in a statement on the website. "Like how a day on the mountain with friends is more meaningful than one spent alone, the sharing of our collective experiences makes our lives more fun."

Another highlight of GoPro's VR channel was the Omni, "a spherical array" of six Hero4 cameras to better capture virtual reality videos. TechTimes said it was first announced in May last year with the hopes of capturing every angle using six different cameras.

This new device costs $5,000 inclusive of the cameras, cables and memory cards. However, if users only want to purchase the array alone, they may have to shell out $1,500.

Omni will be used mainly for the service called LiveVR to stream virtual reality content wirelessly. The same report said it will be run through the partnership of MotoGP and GoPro.
