‘Avatar’ V ‘Star Wars’: James Cameron Talks About Going Against George Lucas’ Franchise

When "Avatar" was released in 2009, many people were calling it the "Star Wars" of our generation. The movie's critical and commercial success further strengthened that claim. Now that "Star Wars" is back and stronger than ever, is James Cameron willing to pit his "Avatar" sequels against "Star Wars Episode 8" and Star Wars Episode 9?"

"I don't want to go head-to-head with Star Wars. That would be stupid," James Cameron told Famous Monsters of Filmland. "And hopefully they won't want to go head-to-head with us." The "Titanic" director said that making "Star Wars" and "Avatar" go head-to-head with each other is not a good business decision.

So how is James Cameron planning to shoot his four "Avatar" sequels? "It's more the way you would shoot a miniseries," Cameron explained to Famous Monsters of Filmland. "We're working across, essentially, eight hours of story."

The four "Avatar" sequels are scheduled to be released on 2018, 2020, 2222 and 2023. On the other hand, "Star Wars Episode 8" will be released in December 2017 while "Star Wars Episode 9" is scheduled for a May 2019 release. The Han Solo movie and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" are spin-off movies and not sequels to "The Force Awakens."

So it looks like there will be no scheduling conflict between the main "Star Wars" movies and Cameron's "Avatar" sequels. But if changes occur and the two movie giants have to go head-to-head against each other, which one would come out on top?

In order to get an idea on how the battle would go, the best thing to do is to look at the critical and commercial performances of the first "Avatar" movie and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." "Avatar" earned a worldwide gross of $2.8 billion -- the all-time best, Box Office Mojo reports—while "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" earned $2.1 billion worldwide—the third all-time best, according to Box Office Mojo. The Rotten Tomatoes critic score of "Avatar" is 83 percent while the Rotten Tomatoes critic score of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is 92 percent.
