Study: Beer Can Help You Lose Weight And Lower Your Cholesterol

The rising rate of obesity has urged many, including those with unhealthy weight to search for a magical elixir for weight loss. A new study suggests that beer can help you lose weight.

Beer For Weight Loss

Beer is often associated with belly fat. However, one compound in beer has the potential benefits for your weight loss. If you drink a glass or two of beer, it won't derail your weight loss goal. It's the binge drinking where you take too much calories that increases your risk to obesity.

Per Eat This, a previous study learned that those who downed their daily drink were 54 percent less likely to have weight issues. Between one to two drinks a day can reduce your risk to weight problems by 41 percent than teetotalers.

Details Of The Recent Study

For the new study, researchers at Oregon State University examined xanthohumol, a flavanoid usually found in hop and beer. They study how its dosage affects the health of the mice, Broadly reported.

The mice were split into two groups. One group was given xanthohumol while the others were given 30 to 60 milligrams of the compound per kilogram of body weight for 12 weeks.

The mice with the highest dosage of xanthohumol experienced a reduction in LDL cholesterol level by 80 percent. Their insulin levels were down by 42 percent with a biomarker of inflammation of 78 percent compared to mice that didn't take the compund. Aside from this, they also gained 22 percent less weight compared to their counterparts in the controlled group.

Xanthohumol As A Diet Supplement

The researchers admitted that they are hoping to bring a pure version of xanthohumol to the market in an easy-to-swallow pill. "Drug companies have contacted us and want more literature [about xanthohumol]," disclosed Cristobal Miranda, lead author of the study.

Miranda added that it might take a significant amount of time before human trials can confirm that the supplements are safe to take on a daily basis. For those who want to try the compound, they are available in supplement stores. However, Miranda added that the variations are not as pure as the one they used in the study.
