Couple saves falling 3-year-old using a mattress

A couple from Burbank recently saved the life of a 3-year-old boy who was about to fall out of an apartment window, according to reports.

ABC Los Angeles was first to report the incident that transpired between a couple moving out of their apartment and the child.

"The child climbed out of the window and was actually hanging out on to what appeared to be a telephone line or cable line. They placed the mattress underneath the child, and at that point the child released and fell to the ground," Burbank Police Lt. John Dilibert said.

Konrad Lightner and his wife, Jennifer, noticed the little boy and his sister throwing toys outside their window as they were unloading their things out of the apartment. After gathering another load to bring out, they saw the little boy throw his leg over the window sill.

"We called 911 and Konrad threw the box spring down trying to break his fall and stood there to catch him," Jennifer said.

Konrad was able to save the boy, who was immediately brought to the hospital for an evaluation. He did not suffer any major injuries.

"It was very surreal afterwards. We were just moving the rest of the day and every once in a while we'd look at each other and just be like, 'That happened. That was real,'" Jennifer shared.

Adding to the curious nature of the event, Jennifer said, was that she and her husband were stuck in an elevator for about 30 minutes before it occurred. Had they not been stuck, they wouldn't have been at the scene to save the boy's life.

Parents of the two children only became aware of what happened after a neighbor called it to their attention.
