'Riverdale' News & Update: Cole Sprouse Leads Archie Comics Drama On CW; See The Other Good-Looking Cast [PHOTOS]

The CW has picked up "Riverdale" for their 2016-2017 lineup of new shows. The show, which hails from "Supergirl" and "The Flash" producer Greg Berlanti, is inspired from the "Archie" comics. It will star former Disney star Cole Sprouse and he will be joined by a cast of other good-looking young kids.

The Hollywood Reporter cites that "Riverdale" will be set in the present time, but the story will delve on the "darkness and weirdness" of living in a small town. Cole Sprouse, who started young in showbiz and starred in "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody" with his twin brother Dylan, will play Archie's best friend, Jughead Jones, in "Riverdale." The former child star was the first cast member to be picked for the series.

Playing Archie Andrews on "Riverdale" is KJ Apa, who is an actor from New Zealand. Deadline reports that the character is quite conflicted and intense. KJ, who has brown hair, had to dye his hair red to resemble the comic book character.

Camila Mendes is playing Veronica Lodge on "Riverdale" and she is a showbiz newcomer who recently graduated from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, per The Hollywood Reporter. Her character is described as intelligent and confident. Veronica moved to the small town from New York after her father was implicated in a scandal, per TV Line.

Lili Reinhart will play Betty Cooper, Archie's childhood best friend. In the comics, Betty and Veronica are rivals for Archie's love, but the girls are also best friends. Betty is described as sweet, nice and studious. Reinhart was in the sitcom "Surviving Jack" on Fox.

While old viewers might be familiar with "Archie," The CW is banking on its young audience for the success of the series. The show's plot is expected to deviate from the comics in a big way. "The CW, Warner Brothers Studios, and the cast bring Riverdale to viewers every week," said Archie Comics CEO and Publisher Jon Goldwater, per Coming Soon. "My promise to fans? You ain't seen nothing yet."
