'The Vampire Diaries' Season 8 News & Update: Show Not Canceled, The CW President Hopes It Will Go Beyond Season

There is no doubt that many are wondering if "The Vampires Diaries" season 8 will be the last in the series. There have been reports claiming that the major characters are leaving the show, including Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder. Will "The Vampire Diaries" go beyond season 8?

'The Vampire Diaries' Losing Its Major Characters

There is no doubt that "The Vampire Diaries" struggled after Nina Dobrev a.k.a Elena Gilbert decided to leave the series. Dobrev was the main protagonist of the show and it was never the same when she decided to move on from it.

However, Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley and the rest of the cast were still able to make it without Nina Dobrev but as said, it was never the same. Kat Graham already announced that "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 would be her last. Somerhalder also announced his possible exit after the upcoming season. There are rumors that Wesley will do the same.

"Last weekend I talked to an audience at a Q&A about the end of #TVD and how excited I was to make what I believe - my last year - be as great as possible," Ian Somerhalder wrote. He explained that it might be his last but "The Vampire Diaries" series might go beyond it.

'The Vampire Diaries' Season 8 To Be The Last?

"The Vampire Diaries" executive producer Julie Plec recognized that the fate of the show depends on Somerhalder and Wesley. "My endgame needs to, in my opinion, emotionally run parallel with the endgame of Paul and Ian, more so than the network and the studio," Plec told Variety.

"When those boys decide that they're done telling stories - which could be tomorrow and could be a year from now or two years from now or whatever - I need to be done. I feel like I owe them that, and I owe the show that."

However, the CW President Mark Pedowitz is hoping that "The Vampire Diaries" will go beyond season 8. "In my dreams, it isn't [the end], but we will see how the audience will react," Pedowitz said per International Business Time, suggesting that the series' fate is not final yet.

Pedowitz added that "The Vampire Diaries" is not canceled but "no determination" has been made at the time. For those who still love to watch the series, "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 might have shorter episodes.
