Pregancy News & Updates: New Study Claims Smoking During Pregnancy Could Cause Schizoprenia

A new study shows that women who smoke cigarettes during their pregnancy are at risk of having a baby suffering from schizophrenia, as he grows older. Smoking while pregnant also has a lot of other dangers that could harm the mothers themselves.

In an article published by Good Therapy, children could develop schizophrenia if their mother were smoking during their pregnancy. The website cited the research written in the American Journal of Psychiatry. Scientists sampled 977 people who were born from 1983 to 1998 from Finland. These people have schizophrenia and they found out that their mothers have nicotine present in their blood during their early stage or mid-stage of pregnancy.

In conclusion, researchers documented those women who smoked while they were pregnant are at high risk of having a child that could develop schizophrenia. Moreover, those who smoke a lot than the usual have a higher risk of having a child suffering from schizophrenia by 38%.

But aside from this mental illness that could affect the child, mothers themselves are also prone to the negative results of smoking. According to WebMD, pregnant women who smoke are more likely to experience miscarriage and even preterm labor. Smoking could also harm a woman's placenta and the baby is prone to experiencing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS.

The study didn't exactly say that the nicotine or smoking was the root of these negative effects to women and their unborn child. However, the link between smoking and schizophrenia was found through this study and scientists would like to call out mothers who are still into this vice. It is safe to say that it is best not to smoke if you know you are pregnant.
