Artificial Intelligence News & Update: Care-Bots For Elderly Dangerous?

There is no stopping for artificial intelligence or AI to progress. AI first appeared in science-fiction films but they are now in the manufacturing industries. Aside from operating machines, there are already robots with AI, which are designed to accompany humans.

Meet Nadine A Social Robot

AI is a hot topic today. Unfortunately, people are torn whether to support it fully or not. Among the issues concerning AI are security risks and job displacement. Yes, with AI in the industry, the human workforce is being reduced because these robots are more skilled and fast. They don't rest because they don't get tired.

If you are a PA or receptionist, you are also in danger of losing your job because a humanoid robot with AI, named Nadine can potentially replace you. Per Science Alert, Nadine is developed by a group of scientists in Singapore.

Nadine looks like a human and she is designed this way because it is more comfortable for humans to communicate to machines when they are also in human form. At the time, the AI-powered humanoid is employed as a receptionist at the Nanyan Technological University. However, researchers are positive that the humanoid robot will also work well as a domestic companion.

Care-bot Dangerous To The Elderly

Although seeing Nadine accompanying an elderly is adorable, a professor of Cognitive Science at the University of Sussex thinks otherwise. Per Prof. Maggie Boden, AI machines like Nadine don't understand loyalty or pain.

"Computer companions worry me very much," she said per Telegraph. "I am very very worried about that. I think these things are very emotionally dangerous."

Per Boden, AI robots don't recognize emotional state and can't respond in an appropriate way because it is too complex for them. For, instance if you tell the robot that you are happy, and you tell it repeatedly it will not be bothered. But if you tell it about your fears, pains or bitterness, you will get the same response. It does not extend the sympathy you need at the time. Thus, care-bots might not be helpful

Parent Herald previously reported that despite AI's progress in machine vision and language learning skills AI is still a no match to humans' capacity to learn. Perhaps, one of these areas is emotional intelligence.

Do you agree that AI is still a no match to humans' capacity to learn and sympathize? Do you agree that care-bots are dangerous? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
