'Finding Dory' News, Reviews: 5 Facts You Should Know About The Ellen DeGeneres Sequel Before Watching

Disney's "Finding Dory" will finally run on the big screen on Friday, June 17. The sequel to the beloved "Finding Nemo," which ran 13 years ago, has Ellen DeGeneres leading the cast and reviews have already started pouring in.

ABC reports that the movie delivers as a "bright and clever" animation that's always expected of any Pixar flick. Rolling Stones note that while "Finding Dory" isn't as fresh as "Finding Nemo," it still manages to be a heartfelt and unforgettable follow up. Here are five facts viewers should know before they watch "Finding Dory":

Ellen DeGeneres Wanted A Sequel.

For years, the TV host and comedienne wanted a follow up to happen. However, she wasn't specifically asking this to be centered on Dory, or that the sequel can be a stand-alone film. Because of the time difference between "Nemo" and "Dory," kids today will still be able to enjoy both films separately. They won't be confused about the connections.

"Finding Dory" Is About Self-Acceptance.

"Finding Dory" director Andrew Stanton said that when the sequel was hatched, they always knew that it will touch on self-acceptance. "The premise I ultimately came with is you're not at peace until you can truly accept who you are," said Stanton via After Ellen.

"Finding Dory" Has Gay/Transgender Characters.

Ellen DeGeneres is amused about rumors of a lesbian couple's appearance in the film, which was previously reported on Parent Herald.  However, she doesn't discount that there could be gay fishes and a transgender stingray in "Finding Dory," per People. Although she means this as a joke, it still goes with the film's message about self-acceptance. "I think everybody that is in the world should be seen and represented," she said.

Forgetful Dory Is Also A Representation Of Every Person.

Her character isn't perfect and her forgetfulness is indeed a major flaw. But Dory has embraced this flaw since "Finding Nemo," which sends out a good message to viewers that you've got to love your imperfections and not let this define you.

"Finding Dory" Took Four Years To Come Together.

Development for "Finding Dory" began in 2011 and the writers and animators have to find the right balance between old characters and new characters. Thankfully, every actor they picked to voice the new characters agreed to do the film in a heartbeat.
