'Hamilton' Movie Release Date: Lin-Manuel Miranda Filming Broadway Show Before Leaving; Mixtape, Documentary Set

"Hamilton" star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda has confirmed he is leaving the Broadway show on July 9. But before his alternate assumes the leading role, the production will be filmed with its original cast for the very first time with its live audience. However, this is not the actual "Hamilton" movie release, which the public has been pinning for a while now.

Lin-Manuel Miranda announced his departure from "Hamilton" during a breakfast with the press in New York, per USA Today. In doing so, he also said that Javier Muñoz will take over his role.  Muñoz has actually been playing the role of Alexander Hamilton in the play at least twice a week. Hello Giggles reports that the actor has also received rave reviews for his performance.

However, Lin-Manuel Miranda said that there's a possibility he could "revisit" his part since "Hamilton's" run on Broadway is far from over. Besides, he's still pretty much a part of "Hamilton," but he'll have a bigger responsibility steering things in the background.

Meanwhile, the "Hamilton" filming with the original cast will take place during two performances with a live audience, but the Tony winner also said he still has no idea what they will do with this. Time and again, Lin-Manuel Miranda has shot down notions that there will be a "Hamilton" movie release, per Entertainment Weekly. That idea might not even happen in the next few years. What is under development as a movie is his other musical, "In the Height."

"Hamilton" Mixtape And Documentary Film Release

Playbill reports that instead of a "Hamilton" movie there will be a "Hamilton Mixtape," which will feature choice cuts from the musical. This will be released in October, which will also be in conjunction with the release of the "Hamilton" documentary film. "It's going to have footage from the show that no one has seen yet," Lin-Manuel Miranda told the press. The official title of the documentary is "Hamilton's America" and it will air on PBS.
