Season 2 Production

"The Last Kingdom," based on the best-selling series "The Saxon Stories" by Bernard Cornwell, officially started the production last week. As Parent Herald previously learned, Netflix has also become a co-producer for the fantasy drama, securing the rights for the show's U.S. airing. The sophomore season is said to pick up in the year 878, with Uhtred giving his sword to King Alfred.

"The Last Kingdom" will premiere on BBC Two and on Netflix in the U.S. in 2017. The series, produced by Carnival Films, had an average of 2.7 million viewers in the first season. Nigel Marchant and Gareth Neame are the executive producers alongside Stephen Butchard, Elizabeth Kilgarriff and Dominic Barlow. The show has received a Best Drama Series nomination from the Royal Television Society.
