‘Wayward Pines’ Season 3 Cancellation News: Ratings Failed To Live Up To Fox’s Expectations?

The fate of "Wayward Pines" is still up in the air, as Fox remains mum about the show's renewal after it aired its Season 2 finale. While the network has yet to release its official announcement on the show's future, a report suggests that the ratings failed to live up to the network's expectations.

"Wayward Pines" Season 2 finale served two purposes: a fitting end to the story and an avenue for the continuation of the plot for Season 3. In an interview with author and series creator Blake Crouch, he told Entertainment Weekly that it was already a surprise that the limited series got renewed for another season.

As most fans can recall, the first season of "Wayward Pines" covered the entire three books of Crouch's series. The show was supposed to be a limited series only, but Fox decided to give the show another season five months after the Season 1 finale aired.

"Wayward Pines" Season 2 also featured a mix of old and new characters. The finale also showed a glimpse into what Season 3 may be all about - evolution of the Abbies.

"If we're lucky enough to have a third season, I think it's possible for characters to return and to have new ones as well," he said.

What might be hindering Fox from renewing "Wayward Pines" Season 3, however, is the Season 2 ratings. According to TV Series Finale, the show only received an average of 0.73 in the 18-49 demographics.

This does not seem to be in line with other hit series on the network such as "Empire" or "Lucifer." However, many fans remain optimistic that "Wayward Pines" Season 3 will happen in order to see if the Abbies will evolve and if there is a brighter future for the human race.
