The Weeknd Donates Over Half A Million To Black Lives Matter Network And University Of Toronto

The Weeknd's recent big donation is music to the ears of its recipients. The Ethiopian musician has donated a generous amount to the University of Toronto and Black Lives Matter Network consecutively.

Tha Fader was the first to report The Weeknd's $50,000-donation to start the Ethiopic Studies program of the University of Toronto, which was followed by his $250,00 contribution to the Black Lives Matter Network which also holds one of its offices in Toronto. As per The Guardian, The Weeknd, Abel Tesfaye hails from Ethiopia whose parents moved to Toronto.

Now that the Ethiopian musician is making money, he wants to give back to his hometown by helping groups empowering minorities. According to Mic, The Weeknd donated money for the Ethiopian program of the University of Toronto in order to share "the brilliant and ancient history of Ethiopia."

As per the donation to Black Lives Matter Network, it seemingly came as a response to the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. The Weeknd first expressed his support of the campaign through a tweet message saying, "Enough is enough. It's time to stand up for this. We can either sit and watch, or do something about it. The time is now. #blacklivematter"

Meanwhile, Jay Z and other artists associated with the streaming service, Tidal donated $1.5 million to the Black Lives Matter Network (via Mic). Drake also condemned the killings, posting on Instagram with a caption, "It's impossible to ignore that the relationship between black and brown communities and law of enforcement remains as strained as it was decades ago. No one begins their life as a hashtag. Yet the trend of being reduced to one continues."
