'Queen of Katwe' Premieres, Lupita Nyong'O Talks Playing Young Mother Character In Disney Movie

Lupita Nyong'O has been getting a lot of praises and awards for her performance in "Queen of Katwe" as the young mother of the child who became a chess prodigy in Africa.

"Queen of Katwe" is based on the book "The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, and One Extraordinary Girl's Dream of Becoming a Grandmaster." It is based on the real life story of the Ugandan chess champion Phiona Mutesi.

During the Hollywood premiere of "Queen of Katwe" at the El Capitan Theater, Nyong'O was interviewed by E! News and she said that she did not know anything about Mutesi and her story until she got the script for the Disney movie. Nyong'O noted that she was reading the first 10 pages of the script and she was already hooked noting that the story of Mutesi blew her away.

Nyong'O continued to say that she decided to do "Queen of Katwe" because it was not like the story coming out of the African continent. She regarded "Queen of Katwe" as heartfelt, funny, true, and uplifting.

As for her role as a young mother in "Queen of Katwe," Nyong'O said that she was really keen on trying the role of a mother because it is something she has never done before. She said that she loved the idea of the challenged and realized that being a mother is hard work. The Oscar award-winning actress even shared that she apologized to her mother a lot since she made "Queen of Katwe."

Aside from Nyong'O, another star of "Queen of Katwe" was present at the Hollywood premiere. USA Today reported that David Oyelowo was present and he brought his family with him. The "Selma" actor said that she also did not know anything about Mutesi but found that the story is incredible.

He noted that no one knows where Katwe, Uganda is despite Mutesi being a chess champion. Oyelowo said that "Queen of Katwe" is different because it is a positive movie.

"Queen of Katwe" will be out in theaters this September 23.
