Gay Parents Vs. Straight Parents: Does It Make A Difference?

Raising children is by far the most consequential role of parents. Factors such as the parents' orientation, be it religious, social, moral or sexual all play a big chunk in this domestic obligation. But does it matter if kids are raised in a same-sex household?

Mercatornet expressed the academe has initiated researches that can answer this query. Although discussions on same-sex parenting were on the table, a new study published in the journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics found that children who come from same-sex household aren't any different from those raised by heterosexual parents.

One of the study's authors, Dr. Nanette Gartrell stated that this has been the only study that compared same-sex and heterosexual parents with stable relationships and their biological children. Moreover, 95 families with only lesbian parents were compared to the same number of families with parents of different sex.

The fact that there are too few same-sex male households was also taken into consideration. It was noted that nothing seemed unusual when it came to the kids' physical, emotional, cognitive and adaptive skills, CNN reported.

In an analogous research conducted by Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, gay dads were found to be relatively satisfactory as heterosexual parents in raising their children. The Daily Mirror reports that the study's objective was to comprehend gay men's approach to parenting.

Professor Dr. Ellen Perrin stated that they created an online survey and sent it out on various websites and social media. Respondents were asked to forward it to gay fathers they knew.

Noticeable feedback such as children being subject to mocking and disgrace were reported by one-third of the respondents. In addition, twenty to thirty percent faced criticism from family members, friends and some church members. In lieu to this, Professor Perrin added that the research emphasizes the importance of protecting families with same-sex parents.

Despite the favorable results, society still raises an eyebrow upon learning who raises the children. This, though, does not stop these parents from making an effort to show their kids that they are not in any way divergent from kids raised by mom and dad. After all, the best way to raise positive children in a negative world is to have positive parents who love them unconditionally and serve as excellent role models.
