Cleveland Cavaliers Sign Point Guard Toney Douglas

The Cleveland Cavaliers have recently signed veteran point guard Toney Douglas. Douglas will be vying against rookie Kay Felder, for minutes as the backup point guard for Kyrie Irving in the upcoming NBA regular season.

After the decision of the Cleveland Cavaliers' original veteran backup point guard, Mo Williams, to retire late into the preseason, the Cavs only had one backup point guard remaining in training camp, in the form of rookie Kay Felder. While the 21-year-old is being mentored by the Kyrie Irving, he has a long way to go before he can get real minutes for the defending champs.

This is where Toney Douglas comes in. Douglas is a long time veteran of the NBA, who will play his seventh season in the league. He previously played for the New Orleans Pelicans in the last season, where he averaged 8.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 20.7 minutes, playing in a total of 61 games, according to the Cleveland Cavaliers official website.

Douglas will add more experienced depth to the point position for the Cavs, as well as some decent point production off the bench. Douglas has played for over 6 teams during his career in the NBA, and joining the Cavaliers will make it his 7th. The 30-year-old guard has also played a year overseas in China for the Jiangsu Dragons of the Chinese Basketball Association, but terminated his contract after the season was over

The Cavs have waived off big man Eric Moreland after the signing of Douglas, according to NBA.com. Cleveland also has not yet finalized their deal with starting shooting guard, J.R. Smith, even with the regular season drawing closer.

The Cavaliers will have their first pre-season game against the Atlanta Hawks on October 10, on the Hawks' home court at the Philips Arena.
