"Sherlock Holmes" theorists say that Sherrinford may be the mentor that honed Jim Moriarty into the deadly enemy that he has been in the BBC series. When Jim Moriarty returns in "Sherlock Season 4" Episode 3, his link to Sherrinford will finally be revealed to Holmes.
