Suicide of 11-Year-Old Boy Caused by Parental Pressure and Failing Grades?; Police Questionnaire Potential Aid

Suicide is a timely problem that should be taken seriously. An 11-year-old boy who was reportedly not able to handle parental pressure and failing grades was the latest victim of the menace.

The latest confirmed case of suicide is that of a boy in Singapore. Investigators initially suspected that it was an accident but later found out that it was indeed a form of self-destruction, according to Channel News Asia.

The death allegedly stemmed from the pressure the boy felt from his parents and his failing grades. But the mother said the boy had not shown any signs of depression, nor she indicated that his child is that of a type who would take his own life.

According to reports, the boy took his life when he jumped off from the 17th floor of a building on May 18. It was found out that before the incident, the 11-year-old boy was supposed to show his parents his grades when he locked himself in his room, according to The Straits Times.

The boy's parents upon knowing that the child had locked the room, opened the door with another key only to find him missing. The 11-year-old student was later then found at the bottom of the building where he lives. Rescue personnel pronounced him dead, reportedly due to  "multiple fractures" and open "skull wound."

The mother during an interview then admitted that whenever the boy would get a mark less than 70, she would punish her child by hitting his palm with a cane. According to the mother, her son would usually cry after being scolded, but he is still able to regain composure and return to his usual happy self.

As a result of such parental pressure, the boy had even resorted to fabricating his school marks just to please his parents. However, during the day that child was about to show another failing grades, parental pressure seemed to have gotten a hold of the boy, presumably adding more pressure to him.

As to what the teachers noticed before the unprecedented event, the boy was not in his usual self during his last days, for he is typically quite and lacking disciplinary issues.

Based on a follow-up inquiry, one teacher said that the boy threw his water bottle at one of his classmates and later admitted that he cannot control his anger. Another instructor stated that the kid was noticeably upset upon knowing he failed an exam and got the passing mark for the other one.

In response to said incident, the local State Coroner revealed a questionnaire which could help determine the stressors and would avoid suicide of teens and kids. Other matters rooting from bullying, harassment and peer pressure would also be looked into.
