LG Latest News, Specs: Upcoming G6 Flagship To Have ‘All-In-One’ Camera Module For Iris Scanner, Front Camera Setup

LG Electronics is planning to use an iris scanner to boost the security feature of its upcoming flagship Smartphone, the LG G6. While it's not an entirely new concept, the South Korean firm is aiming to pick up where Samsung left the technology after they scrapped the Galaxy Note 7.

In their recent post, Android Authority said that "it's possible" that the LG G6, which is scheduled for a 2017 release, will incorporate an "all-in-one module" that will serve two functions: a front facing camera and an iris scanner. While the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 had a separate camera for each purpose, LG aims to use a "filter changing mechanism" that will change the camera's functionality. In this case, the façade of the upcoming LG G6 will be cleaner, and should make up for a minimalist aspect since only one lens will be in charge to do two specific tasks.

GSM Arena also added that the single module LG is proposing only has a total volume of 0.36cc. A dual setup, on the other hand, will take up 0.47cc. It's hardly noticeable in the eyes of a user, but for LG, it means a whole lot, especially if they're thinking ahead of aesthetics.

Should Samsung decide to resurrect the technology in one of their future devices and LG pursues its vision, there's a great chance that other OEMs will follow suit considering that an LG official who requested to be anonymous disclosed that they have received "multiple orders" for its integrated module. Among others, the employment of an iris scanner would make a Smartphone more secure. Pair it with a fingerprint scanner that's already a market staple, then you'll have a vault of a device.

There are not a lot of rumors about the LG G6, but Tech Radar claims that it will come with a "more premium look" by using tempered glass at the back and an OLED display in front. In addition, the G6 will "most likely" use a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 chip and USB Type-C. Some are also saying that LG's upcoming torchbearer will retain or improve the G5's standard 4GB RAM and 32GB onboard storage.
