‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel: Benedict Cumberbatch’s Hero To Replace Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Spark As Leader of The Avengers?

"Doctor Strange" is the newest hero of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With his ability to bend the time, the MCU seems up for a major change. Speculations are that Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Stephen Strange will be the "new" Tony Spark (Robert Downey Jr.) of The Avengers.

The time-bending twist in the "Doctor Strange" is expected to make a major impact in the future Marvel stories. Doctor Strange defeated the main villain Dormammu through the use of the Eye of Agamotto by trapping him in time. He threatened Dormammu that they will get stuck in that time loop forever where he kills Doctor Strange forever unless he leaves the Earth.

With that and the fact that Robert Downey Jr. can't play Tony Stark forever, there are speculations that Benedict Cumberbatch would take the spotlight. Doctor Strange could be the new person to bind The Avengers together.

And that's what The Hollywood Reporter asked Jon Spaihts, the writer of "Doctor Strange." Spaihts said that "whether Strange will inherit the mantle of the cocky patriarch of the Avengers, I have no idea. Obviously, no one wants to see Downey stop playing this role."

"There is a kind of vague parallel between the two of them. These are both rich, successful, brilliant men with a sardonic wit and an eye for the ladies. And they have fairly similar looks. Happily, I think the simple reality of having them played by these two very individual and talented actors will serve to differentiate them," he explained.

Meanwhile, the next standalone "Doctor Strange" movie might pick up on the need for a new protector of the Earth now that the Ancient One died. Could it be Doctor Strange?

"As we leave the world, this smoking aftermath of this brush with nonexistence, it is an Earth without its protector. The aspiring replacement for that protector is green and new and still has a lot to learn and that's a world in peril. I think that could very well be the starting point for the following story," Spaihts told THR.
